Frequently Asked Questions
What are the differences between a VDU, a VDT, a monitor and DSE?
There isn't one all of these terms mean the same a computer screen showing
text, numbers or graphics.
top^
Am I at risk?
VDU/DSE's receive the blame for many ailments and conditions, however these tend to be attributed to the way an operator works rather than the actual VDU/DSE causing the problems.
top^
Don't they cause RSI?
No. VDU/DSE's don't cause RSI. Repetitive Strain Injury is caused from just that repetitive movement that causes a strain on a particular muscle group.
top^
Can they affect my eyesight?
Extensive research into the use of VDU/DSE's has revealed no evidence that
they cause eye disorders or diseases. However long periods behind a DU/DSE
can cause tired eyes which in turn can cause discomfort.
top^
What about contact lenses?
Heat generated from VDU's can make the air seem drier. If you suffer some
discomfort from this try blinking more often, eye drops or ask your employer
to increase the humidity within your environment.
top^
What about Bifocals?
Bifocal wearers are possibly the most affected by VDU's as the constant raising
and lowering of the head can and lead to an RSI complaint.
top^
Can they cause headaches?
Headaches can result from: Screen glare, poor image quality, a need for spectacles,
Stress, anxiety, reading from the screen without breaks, poor posture. Most
of the problems can be resolved once the cause is known.
top^
Do they give out radiation?
Yes but it is well below safe levels set out by International recommendations
and all PC manufacturers have to comply by those rules.
top^
Does it affect pregnancies?
Current scientific research shows that VDU's have no bearing on pregnancies
or birth defects of any kind. However sitting in one position all day behind
a vdu could cause some discomfort. If you have any worries or questions please
speak to your doctor.
top^
Can they cause skin disorders?
In extremely rare instances this has been known to occur. But it seems that
this is probably due to dry air, electromagnetic electricity and personal
susceptibility. Putting moisture back into the air or allowing fresh air to
circulate can help.
top^
Can they cause epileptic fits?
There is no medical evidence that this can happen. Most people who suffer
from epilepsy work quite happily behind a VDU with no side effects.
top^
Are laptops the same?
A portable screen is the same as any static monitor. The problems however
with laptops come from the size of the screen and keyboard. Working for prolonged
lengths of time on laptops is not recommended but if that has to be the case
then a docking station with full sized keyboard and screen is recommended.
top^
Can using a mouse be harmful?
Any prolonged use of a mouse can be harmful simply because it only uses one
hand and two fingers. Hence repetitive movements increase which increases
the risk of RSI. These risks can be reduced by good posture and technique.
