Manual Handling Risk Assessment

You must assess the risks that staff face when lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling as part of your overall health and safety risk assessment.

Our Manual Handling Risk Assessments can vary both in time to carry out the assessment and to write the report.

For a typical office block with 40-60 staff, it should take about two hours for the inspection plus two hours to write the report.

The risk assessment depends on the type of business you are, the number and size of the buildings and number of occupiers.

The Manual Handling Risk Assessment is completed for all manual handling tasks, where it is considered that the task places an employee or visitor to the premises at risk of injury.

Our Manual Handling Risk Assessments typically cover the following areas (not exhaustive):

  • The general property information and including the use of premises, number of floors, number of occupiers.
  • We identify significant hazards in your workplace. Consult staff about the hazards they face and ask how you can reduce the risk of them occurring.
  • The working environment, and work out who might be harmed, and how.
  • We consider staff that might be particularly vulnerable to lifting such as the young, disabled or pregnant employees needing to lift or carry as part of their job.
  • We also consider the risks to visitors to your workplace, such as cleaners and contractors.
  • We evaluate the Loads and the tasks.
  • Individual Capabilities.
  • Risk Rating for the tasks.
  • Risk Areas Identified.
  • See what measures are in place and or need to be introduced to eliminate or control the risks.
  • Our recommendations and any prioritised action plan to rectify deficiencies (if any) found during the assessment.
