To enable staff to meet the requirements of current fire safety legislation – The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and associated guidance by providing the knowledge necessary to become a fire warden.

In this section, learners will gain an understanding of the current fire safety legislation that governs the workplace. The course covers the key legal requirements and responsibilities under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, as well as other relevant regulations such as the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Participants will learn about the obligations of employers, employees, and fire wardens in ensuring fire safety, and how these laws aim to reduce the risk of fire-related accidents. By the end of this section, learners will be able to identify the legal requirements for fire safety in their organisation and ensure compliance with current legislation.

In this section, participants will learn about the roles and responsibilities of the “Responsible Person” and the “Competent Person” in fire safety management. The “Responsible Person” is typically the employer or the person in charge of the premises, and they have the overall duty to ensure that fire safety regulations are met. The “Competent Person,” on the other hand, is an individual designated by the Responsible Person to carry out specific fire safety tasks, such as conducting fire risk assessments and implementing fire safety measures. Learners will explore the legal requirements, tasks, and qualifications needed for both roles, ensuring they understand how these positions contribute to maintaining a safe working environment in the event of a fire.

In this section, participants will explore the responsibilities of employees in maintaining fire safety within the workplace. Employees are required to cooperate with their employer’s fire safety arrangements and follow any procedures set out to prevent and respond to fires. This includes attending fire safety training, participating in fire drills, and reporting potential fire hazards. Learners will gain an understanding of the importance of being proactive in their role, following instructions from fire wardens, and taking appropriate action in the event of a fire, such as evacuating the building safely and efficiently. The section ensures that employees are fully aware of their crucial part in maintaining a safe work environment.

In this section, participants will learn about the different types of fires and the common causes of fire in the workplace. Understanding the nature of various fires, such as Class A (solids), Class B (liquids), Class C (gases), and electrical fires, is crucial for effective prevention and response. The course will also cover common causes of fire, including faulty electrical equipment, human error, poor housekeeping, and arson. By recognising these risks, fire wardens can help identify potential hazards and take appropriate preventive measures to reduce the risk of fire, ensuring a safer environment for all.

This section covers the different types of fire extinguishers and other essential firefighting equipment available in the workplace. Participants will learn how to identify and select the appropriate fire extinguisher for different fire classes, including water, foam, dry powder, CO2, and wet chemical extinguishers.
